Pool Filter Cleaning & Repair
in Las Vegas
Signs Your Pool Filter Needs Cleaning or Repair
Your filter is your pool's primary line of defense — and when it's compromised, the whole system suffers. In Las Vegas, filters clog faster than in mild climates due to desert dust, fine sand, and high calcium content. These are the signs that professional attention is overdue.
- Pressure gauge reading 8–10 PSI above your clean baseline — the most reliable indicator that media is loaded and flow is restricted
- Reduced water flow from return jets — the pool feels like it's barely circulating
- Cloudy or hazy water despite correct chemistry — a clogged filter can't remove fine particles regardless of sanitizer levels
- Algae growth despite adequate chlorine — restricted circulation creates dead zones where algae establishes without opposition
- Debris returning to the pool through return jets — indicates torn media, damaged grids, or a failed multiport valve
- Visible damage to filter housing, valves, band clamps, or connections
- Water bypassing the filter entirely — a serious condition that means unfiltered water is recirculating through the pool
All Three Filter Types — All Major Brands
We clean, repair, and restore all three major filter types found in Las Vegas residential pools. Each type has different service requirements, different failure modes, and a different cleaning process. We handle all of them in-house.
Cartridge Filters
Most Common in Las VegasCartridge filters are the most common filter type in Las Vegas residential pools. They trap fine particles in pleated polyester fabric and require periodic removal and deep cleaning. Las Vegas hard water and desert dust load cartridges faster than manufacturer schedules account for.
- Pressure reading 8–10 PSI above clean starting pressure (check during variable speed high-speed run times)
- Visible debris embedded in pleats that won't rinse out
- Torn, collapsed, or deformed cartridge end caps
- Calcium scale buildup on cartridge fabric — common in Las Vegas hard water
DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters
Finest Filtration AvailableDE filters provide the finest filtration of any filter type — capable of capturing particles as small as 3–5 microns. They use a diatomaceous earth powder coating on internal grids to trap debris and require periodic backwashing and recharging. When grids fail, unfiltered water and DE powder return directly to the pool.
- DE powder returning to the pool through return jets — indicates torn or damaged grids
- Pressure not dropping after backwash — media is channeling or grids are bypassed
- Torn or damaged filter grids allowing debris bypass
- Channeling through damaged grid sections — visible as pressure spikes without adequate flow
Sand Filters
Common in commercialSand filters use a bed of specially graded silica sand to trap debris and are backwashed to clean. They are the lowest-maintenance filter type but require sand replacement or rejuvenation every 5–7 years as the sand loses its sharp edges and filtering effectiveness. In Las Vegas, hard water calcium can also bind sand media over time.
- Cloudy water despite regular backwashing — sand has lost filtering effectiveness
- Sand returning to the pool — cracked or broken laterals allowing media bypass
- Pressure not responding to backwash — channeling through aged or compacted sand
- 5–7 years since last sand replacement — media is past its effective lifespan
Our Filter Cleaning Process
Every filter service follows a thorough, professional process specific to the filter type. We document starting pressure, inspect every component, and record clean operating pressure so you have a baseline for monitoring between service visits.
- Record starting pressure for baseline documentation
- Shut down system safely and release all pressure before opening
- Remove cartridge assembly and inspect end caps, cores, and fabric
- Apply cartridge cleaning agent and/or soak treatment for deep pleat cleaning
- Inspect all O-rings and gaskets — lubricate or replace as needed
- Reinstall assembly and record clean operating pressure
- Note any cartridges requiring replacement and advise on timing
- Record starting pressure for baseline documentation
- Backwash to waste — remove all spent DE and debris from system
- Open filter and remove all grids for individual inspection
- Full inspection of every grid for tears, damage, or channeling
- Clean manifold and all internal components
- Reinstall grids and recharge with fresh DE powder at correct concentration
- Record clean operating pressure and verify backwash valve operation
- Replace damaged grids as needed — labor included, grids charged separately
- Backwash and rinse cycle — remove loose debris before opening
- Inspect multiport valve operation, seals, and all port positions
- Remove all sand media from filter tank
- Inspect and replace any broken or cracked laterals
- Install fresh correctly-graded silica sand at proper depth
- Close filter, perform startup backwash, and record clean operating pressure
- Verify all multiport valve positions and confirm no bypass conditions
Filter Repair Services
Beyond cleaning, we handle all common filter repair needs in-house — no outsourcing, no waiting for a third party. If we identify a repair need during a cleaning visit, we can address it the same appointment in most cases.
How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter in Las Vegas?
Las Vegas filter cleaning frequency is higher than manufacturer recommendations — because manufacturer schedules are designed for average climates. Fine desert dust, wind-driven debris, and high calcium content in Las Vegas water load filters significantly faster than those schedules account for. Following manufacturer guidance here leads to chronic pressure problems and premature filter damage.
| Filter Type | Manufacturer Recommendation | Las Vegas Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge | Every 6 months | Every 4–6 months |
| DE (Diatomaceous Earth) | Every 6 months | Every 6 months + monthly backwash |
| Sand | Backwash as needed | Backwash monthly minimum |
