Signs Your Pool Filter Needs Cleaning or Repair

Your filter is your pool's primary line of defense — and when it's compromised, the whole system suffers. In Las Vegas, filters clog faster than in mild climates due to desert dust, fine sand, and high calcium content. These are the signs that professional attention is overdue.

  • Pressure gauge reading 8–10 PSI above your clean baseline — the most reliable indicator that media is loaded and flow is restricted
  • Reduced water flow from return jets — the pool feels like it's barely circulating
  • Cloudy or hazy water despite correct chemistry — a clogged filter can't remove fine particles regardless of sanitizer levels
  • Algae growth despite adequate chlorine — restricted circulation creates dead zones where algae establishes without opposition
  • Debris returning to the pool through return jets — indicates torn media, damaged grids, or a failed multiport valve
  • Visible damage to filter housing, valves, band clamps, or connections
  • Water bypassing the filter entirely — a serious condition that means unfiltered water is recirculating through the pool
Waiting too long between filter cleanings doesn't just cause cloudy water — it causes permanent damage to filter media and internal components. A cartridge that gets cleaned on schedule lasts 24–36 months. One that's neglected may fail in 12 months. The cleaning cost is always less than the replacement cost.

All Three Filter Types — All Major Brands

We clean, repair, and restore all three major filter types found in Las Vegas residential pools. Each type has different service requirements, different failure modes, and a different cleaning process. We handle all of them in-house.

🔵

Cartridge Filters

Most Common in Las Vegas

Cartridge filters are the most common filter type in Las Vegas residential pools. They trap fine particles in pleated polyester fabric and require periodic removal and deep cleaning. Las Vegas hard water and desert dust load cartridges faster than manufacturer schedules account for.

Signs Your Cartridge Filter Needs Service
  • Pressure reading 8–10 PSI above clean starting pressure (check during variable speed high-speed run times)
  • Visible debris embedded in pleats that won't rinse out
  • Torn, collapsed, or deformed cartridge end caps
  • Calcium scale buildup on cartridge fabric — common in Las Vegas hard water
When cleaning can no longer restore adequate flow, we replace cartridges at no additional labor cost. Cartridges are charged separately. In Las Vegas conditions, cartridges typically last 24–36 months with regular cleaning.
🟡

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

Finest Filtration Available

DE filters provide the finest filtration of any filter type — capable of capturing particles as small as 3–5 microns. They use a diatomaceous earth powder coating on internal grids to trap debris and require periodic backwashing and recharging. When grids fail, unfiltered water and DE powder return directly to the pool.

Signs Your DE Filter Needs Service
  • DE powder returning to the pool through return jets — indicates torn or damaged grids
  • Pressure not dropping after backwash — media is channeling or grids are bypassed
  • Torn or damaged filter grids allowing debris bypass
  • Channeling through damaged grid sections — visible as pressure spikes without adequate flow
When cleaning can no longer restore adequate flow, we replace grids at no additional labor cost. Grids are charged separately.
🟤

Sand Filters

Common in commercial

Sand filters use a bed of specially graded silica sand to trap debris and are backwashed to clean. They are the lowest-maintenance filter type but require sand replacement or rejuvenation every 5–7 years as the sand loses its sharp edges and filtering effectiveness. In Las Vegas, hard water calcium can also bind sand media over time.

Signs Your Sand Filter Needs Service
  • Cloudy water despite regular backwashing — sand has lost filtering effectiveness
  • Sand returning to the pool — cracked or broken laterals allowing media bypass
  • Pressure not responding to backwash — channeling through aged or compacted sand
  • 5–7 years since last sand replacement — media is past its effective lifespan
Our sand filter service includes backwashing, and offers full lateral inspection, and complete sand replacement when needed.

Filter Repair Services

Beyond cleaning, we handle all common filter repair needs in-house — no outsourcing, no waiting for a third party. If we identify a repair need during a cleaning visit, we can address it the same appointment in most cases.

📦
Cartridge Replacement
When cartridges are beyond cleaning — torn fabric, collapsed cores, or calcium-saturated pleats — we replace them with correct OEM or equivalent replacement elements. Labor included, cartridges billed separately.
🔲
DE Grid Replacement
Torn or damaged DE grids allow unfiltered water and DE powder to bypass into the pool. We replace individual grids or full grid assemblies. Labor included, grids billed separately.
🏖️
Sand Replacement
Aged sand loses its sharp edges and filtering effectiveness over time. We perform full drain, media removal, lateral inspection, and fresh correctly-graded silica sand installation.
🔩
Lateral Replacement
Cracked or broken laterals in sand filters allow sand to return to the pool through return jets. We replace damaged laterals and verify full lateral assembly integrity before reinstalling.
🏠
Filter Housing Repair
Cracked band clamps, damaged O-ring channels, and deteriorated housing components are repaired or replaced to restore a proper pressure seal and prevent leaks at the equipment pad.
🔄
Filter Valve Repair & Replacement
Multiport valves, push-pull valves, and backwash valves that are leaking, bypassing, or failing to seal correctly are repaired or replaced with correct replacement parts for your specific filter model.

How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas filter cleaning frequency is higher than manufacturer recommendations — because manufacturer schedules are designed for average climates. Fine desert dust, wind-driven debris, and high calcium content in Las Vegas water load filters significantly faster than those schedules account for. Following manufacturer guidance here leads to chronic pressure problems and premature filter damage.

Filter TypeManufacturer RecommendationLas Vegas Recommendation
CartridgeEvery 6 monthsEvery 4–6 months
DE (Diatomaceous Earth)Every 6 monthsEvery 6 months + monthly backwash
SandBackwash as neededBackwash monthly minimum
The most reliable indicator for any filter type is your pressure gauge — not a calendar schedule. When pressure rises 8–10 PSI above your documented clean baseline, it's time. Learn more about understanding your pool equipment →

Why a Dirty Filter Affects Your Entire Pool System

A clogged or restricted filter doesn't just cause cloudy water — it creates a cascade of problems across every other piece of equipment on your pad. Keeping your filter clean is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect everything downstream.

⚙️
Pump Damage
Reduced flow causes pump cavitation and seal failure. A pump fighting a clogged filter works harder, runs hotter, and fails significantly earlier than a pump with clean filtration. See our pump repair page →
🌿
Algae Growth
Low circulation creates stagnant dead zones where algae establishes without opposition. Many green pool situations begin with an overdue filter clean — not a chemical problem.
🔥
Heater Shutdown
Heater flow switches detect low water flow and shut down the heater to prevent heat exchanger damage. A clogged filter that restricts flow will trigger this repeatedly — often misdiagnosed as a heater fault.
🧂
Salt Cell Output Drop
Salt chlorinators produce less chlorine when water flow through the cell is restricted. A clogged filter can cause your pool to under-sanitize while the salt system controller reads everything as normal. See our saltwater pool service →
🧪
Chemistry Imbalance
Without proper water turnover, chemical additions don't distribute evenly. You end up treating part of the pool while other zones remain unbalanced — making chemistry harder to stabilize regardless of what you add. Read about LSI balance →
💰
Higher Energy Costs
A variable speed pump working against a restricted filter consumes significantly more energy to maintain flow. A clean filter is one of the fastest ways to reduce pump operating costs. See our energy savings guide →

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when my pool filter needs cleaning?
The most reliable indicator is your pressure gauge. When pressure rises 8–10 PSI above your documented clean baseline, it's time to clean — regardless of how recently the last clean was. Cloudy water and reduced return jet flow are also reliable signs. For variable speed pumps, check pressure during the high-speed run cycle. Learn more about understanding your pool equipment →
How long does a filter clean take?
A standard cartridge filter clean takes approximately 45–60 minutes. DE filter service takes 60–90 minutes. Sand replacement is a longer process typically requiring 2–3 hours depending on filter size and media condition.
Can a dirty filter cause a green pool?
Yes. A clogged filter reduces circulation and creates stagnant dead zones where algae establishes without opposition. Many green pool situations begin with an overdue filter clean — not a chemistry problem. See our green pool cleanup page →
How long do pool filter cartridges last in Las Vegas?
In Las Vegas conditions, cartridges typically last 24–36 months with regular cleaning. Cartridges that go extended periods without cleaning accumulate calcium scale and debris that shortens that lifespan significantly — sometimes to 12 months or less.
Is filter cleaning included in weekly pool service?
Filter cleaning is included in The Premier Plan base rate — no separate scheduling or additional charges. For standard weekly service clients it is available as a scheduled add-on at any time.
How do I know if my filter needs repair vs just cleaning?
If DE powder is returning to the pool, sand is returning through the returns, or pressure won't respond to backwashing — those are repair signals, not just cleaning signals. We assess the full condition of every filter during each service visit and advise clearly on what it needs. We never recommend a repair without being able to show you exactly what's wrong.
